Finally in Texas! 2 days of driving and we're just about at the border of Mexico, not that were going to cross it, but it goes to show how long it takes to drive through. Yesterday the drive from Louisiana to Texas was an incredible contrast of scenery - once we hit Texas the terrain was more rugged and bare (and hot!) we got to the camp quite late and headed out to see the Alamo in San Antonio before we had dinner - its basically a stone building in the middle of the town with various artifacts inside (which u cant take pictures of) telling the story of the last battle of the alamo indians. they take the preservation of this really seriously and apparently when Ozzie Ozbourne was there some 10 odd years ago on a tour he was so drunk he pissed up against the wall and they have never let him back into San Antonio because of it.
it closed pretty early so we headed onto the river walk which we thought was a walk along - well, a river. But it was an artifical one underneath the streets of San Antonio. it was amazing! it had loads of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs lining the banks and you could go on gondolers down it. it was really pretty and unexpected! after we headed back for dinner a couple of us fancied a dip in the pool - dont ask me why but we did. i think it was the first camp site that one was open so we thought what the hell. it was freezing. which is why we were glad for the hot tub! lol.
Today we drove down to Pecos which is where we are now - its basically a stop for us to get to before crissing into New Mexico and drive as far as we can before dark. But we were pretty lucky as they had a college match on - it was perhaps the best part of this trip - totally unexpected and really amazing - it was like a scene in a movie with mascots, cheerleaders and banners. we were the only non pecos people there which attracted alot of attention - many were trying to explain the rules of the game to us, but it was completely lost on me. :o) take a look at the pix to see what i mean......GO PECOS EAGLES!! xxxxxx
