Updates from South East Asia!
Oh My God. Just to let you know we (just) survived the boat trip from Phi Phi to Phuket. I haven't been that scared for my life for at least 3 weeks, no, in fact, a month; not since the excruciating plane journey into Bangkok.
Seriously, people were throwing up, life jackets were on, half the time we were submerged beneath the waves and the other half of the time we were soaring through the air having taken flight from one gargantuan wave and clinging on in apprehension for when we crashed down into the next one. My window was smashed (as was the one behind us) when a particularly violent wave struck and so we got wet every time a wave hit the window (about every 10 seconds). There was water pouring from the ceiling where it had soaked the upper decks and was leaking through. I felt as though I was on a rollercoaster without the safety harness. Every time we took off from the water the boat pitched violently sideways and we were thrown about like ragdolls as deafening thuds and another lurching forwards of the boat told us we'd hit the next wave. As I looked out of my window (perched on the edge of my seat, gripping the seat in front with one white-knuckled fist and clutching the windowsill with the other to keep my balance) instead of the usual sight of an apparently solid but rippling flat surface stretching into the distance all I could see was a mountain range of monstrous and seemingly insurmountable waves we were attempting to charge straight through. At a ridiculous speed, I might add. The captain either really knew what he was doing (which seems unlikely given the evidence), he is a thrill seeking idiot, suicidal or has a very sick sense of humour. It made me smile though to see a little Thai boy just in front of us, not even slightly fazed, singing "We will, we will rock you! Ha ha!" obviously pleased with himself for finding an apt song to fit the moment and joyfully shouting "CRASH!! Ha ha!" everytime we smashed into another wave!
As we docked, an announcement came over the tannoy- "we apologise for the inconvenience experienced, we hope you will travel with us again soon". "Not bloody likely" I said to Dave. "Inconvenience? INCONVENIENCE?!" i spluttered incredulously, an edge of hysteria entering my voice. "How the hell can he describe the all-consuming terror that has been the last hour and a half as 'inconvenient'?!". It was okay though, as soon as we got on to dry land I was so deliriously happy to be alive I no longer cared.
We got a taxi and headed to Patong, where we spent a couple of hours wandering around, getting hassled constantly and having a couple of drinks to unwind. Pete really wasn't well, he had a hangover to begin with and then that boat ride...He's spent the rest of the day lying on the beach trying to move as little as possible. After about four hours in Patong we got a taxi to the airport and although I was a little nervous at take-off I can honestly say it was nothing compared to the boat and thankfully the plane journey went really smoothly because to be honest by this point if anything had gone wrong with the flight I would have wrenched the door open and jumped from the plane myself, save waiting around panicking.Hope you are all well and haven't had too many near-death experiences of your own. Jxx
