Updates from South East Asia!
The photo has nothing to do with where we are by the way i just thought it looked pretty. We're in Koh Samui and its not too bad here at all! Definately not as nice as Koh Pha Ngan but definately not bad.The area we're in (Chaweng) is very touristy and over commercialized (there's a McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Boots, Burger King...all the usual culprits) but there's a nice beach and nice people. It's pretty pricey though as the place we've been staying in is 10 pounds a night so we've just moved to a cheaper one (half the price, grr...) for this last night on the island before we head back to good ol' Koh Pha Ngan. We're planning on staying another 2 nights in Koh Pha Ngan before we move on to Krabi, Koh Phi Phi and Phuket but since when does anything go according to plan?
I'm guessing it's been on the news there too but theres been a bit of a development in Sri Lanka of late: They're at war. Slight problem since we're due to land there in about 6 weeks...Dave told me that a bus bomb by a Sri Lankan terrorist group had killed 60 people and the government had retaliated by air bombing the terrorist region, which obviously isn't fantastic news but we hadn't realised the extent of the situation until yesterday when we learned that further retaliatory air strikes are planned and the country has officially declared war.Ah. In the light of this news we've decided that the responsible decision (not wimpy, responsible) is to avoid this area altogether and go to Vietnam instead. Never mind eh? Not exactly a disappointing compromise really now is it? Could be worse, although probably not for the Sri Lankan people, admittedly. Thought i should probably let you all know that we're not still planning to go in case you're watching the news listening to stories of people being blown up left, right and centre and thinking "Hang on a minute isn't that where Jess and Dave are heading?". I know how you all worry.
Over the last few days I've mostly just been lounging on the beach, swimming in the sea, drinking (er, soft drinks, obviously) and wandering around the local town area, trying not to burn (any more at least, my shoulders, forehead and nose are all looking mighty attractive at the moment due to the peeling sunburn.its a good look, it'll catch on, you mark my words). Dave's been sleeping. Honestly, thats it. Actually no he does wake every 12 hours or so to eat an extraordinary amount of food but that tires him out so much he's forced to return to bed to sleep, again.
You lot are pretty pants at emailing me updates from the UK you know. I don't want to hear about how beautifully hot and sunny it is, by the way, because i think it's extremely inconsiderate of England to go and deliver a very good impersonation of a summer the moment i leave it. Other than that, all updates are welcome, hint hint.Loadsa love Jessxxxx
