(The website has lost HK again!) This is the site of the infamous Kowloon Walled City, a place of squalor, degradation and poverty...and loads of illegal electricity stolen from neighbouring blocks of flats! I only visited it once, in the company of people who knew the ropes and spoke Cantonese fluently. I remember dodgy-looking cables everywhere and filthy water flowing down the gutters of narrow streets..but it was demolished in 1992 after the handover agreement between Britain and China, and this beautiful park was opened in 1995. It's the first time we've seen it, and it was incredibly moving to hear birdsong and laughter in the same place. And to see huge trees which have all been planted since we left - a sobering reminder of just how long ago it was!
