(The website has lost HK again!) This is the site of the infamous Kowloon Walled City, a place of squalor, degradation and poverty...and loads of illegal electricity stolen from neighbouring blocks of flats! I only visited it once, in the company of people who knew the ropes and spoke Cantonese fluently. I remember dodgy-looking cables everywhere and filthy water flowing down the gutters of narrow streets..but it was demolished in 1992 after the handover agreemen...

Fishing boats and holiday crowds on Cheung Chau island...we took the ferry out here this afternoon (£2 each way for an hour's ferry ride) and walked over to the beach on the other side of the island, then out to the lookout point on the southern hill. The Harbour is the same as it ever was, but there are proper toilets now! And showers, and changing rooms! Same old rubbish floating in the sea, though...we were always told to keep our mouths firmly shut while sw...

Two lovely cappuccinos this morning in the YMCA - I used to play badminton here (yes, really!!) and spent many happy hours in the bookshop and cafe. I loved the Rooster 2017 on Andy's coffee, though I'm not sure what the character on mine means - there was a bit of a lost-in-translation moment between me and the waitress!

There are even more and higher buildings here than in our days here...they march up the Peak like an invading army, covering every square inch they possibly can. Some buildings are so thin they look distinctly unstable, and my resident expert engineer husband tells me they'd sway in the wind...I'm not sure I'd be entirely happy with that! We visited another batch of old haunts today, a trip across the harbour on the Star Ferry and a bus ride down to Stanley Mark...
