After some unsuccessful bartering with the grand taxis to get us to Safrou for a reasonable (not tourist price) we headed to the train station in Fes for a day trip to Meknes (only 30mins by train). The train station at each end is miles from our destination or start point so by the time we had arrived in the Old Medina we had tired feet and were thirsty for our daily ration of mint tea! The town is clearly poorer than Fes and with very little tourism industry which made it a very honest account of Moroccan life. The city walls and gates are impressive and the souks very intimate (and gruesome with more camel heads, half dead chickens and pieces of meat that I wouldn't dare hazard a guess at!). The flies were horrible and put us off the patisserie stalls garnished with yummy looking sweets.
With some inflated prices compared to other towns we decided to spare our budget and get something cheap on the hoof......this translates to sticky cake......a lovely patisserie had what we wanted and after paying gave us some gratis small bites.....some genuine kindness and something that the guide books write about.....
It is definitely time for us to sit on a bus for 11hrs.....weary legs and a tiredness of Fes.....although Marrakech may well be out of the frying pan and into the fire? But at least we are closer to our days in the mountains! Just hoping the bus stops or has toilets? Otherwise it will be a real test....

Sue This one doesn't sound like a particularly good day except for the generosity. Hope your bus journey was OK. Sue xxxxx
Pam Enjoy your respite on the bus and put your feet up (if there's room.) Keep fingers or might be more appropriate to say legs crossed for a loo. Lol Pam xx
