The quietest Bus Ride
Sunday is the first day returning to our schools after a quiet "Persian Gulf" resort weekend. I will skip all classroom details for now to report its greatest effect, no teacher talking for hours after school! Not one sound! Come on now, that is a rare event; the hundreds of teachers I had met stateside and UAE always have something to say. The educational council hires a travel agency to coordinate the housing and transport for teachers who relocate into the U.A.E. And, now being located in Western Region by E11, Al Ruwais, Al Gharbia-way, our commute is 90 minutes or more each way depending on fog, sand and a million trucks. Right after this ( and every one) school day ends, half dozen teachers are fitted inside a well-used mini-van, while we are all sitting still in air conditioning and watching the pre-"Las Vegas" landscape. Then, a few minutes passes, maybe a half hour, and every teachers necks relax and each head slowly roll side to side, NOT one word is spoken for hours!
