Today we went out to Pearl Harbour. The day started badly and got worse from there. We were waiting to be picked up and the tour company was late. S then realised she did not have photo ID with here which the voucher said we nèeded so she ran back to the room to get it. Soon after our bus arrived, I explained to the driver that S had forgotten her ID and would be there in a couple of minutes. The driver then said that no ID was needed.
S arrived soon after with the ID she didn't need and we were on our way. Or, so we thought. We drove around to other hotels to pick up others but then ended up back at our hotel to pick up a "later group". Eh? Why the hell would they have two different pick up times for the same hotel?
Anyway, now we were on our way. Part of the tour was a city tour of downtown Honolulu. This entailed driving through the city on our way to Pearl Harbour and the driver telling us which buildings to take photos of. We then got pulled over by the cops after the driver apparently cut off a police car. He managed to talk his way out of a ticket and we continued on to Pearl Harbour.
As we entered the memorial alarms started sounding and an announcement came over the PA about some alert. It turned out to be a bomb threat which closed down the shuttle buses between different sites.
The threat was dealt with but disruption meant we had very little time to look around the USS Missouri, the aircraft carrier where Japan surrendered at the end of WWII. We had to then rush back to get to our slot to travel out by boat to the USS Arizona memorial which is over the top of the sunken ship and the bodies of her crew.
We then had a late lunch before going to the place to meet our driver to go back to the hotel. About 15 minutes after we were to be picked up someone else from the tour company arrived to say there had been an incident and that our bus would be there in 30 minutes. The bus finally arrived and the driver decided he'd go to the toilet and delay us further. We finally got back to the hotel. Not even the Americans left a tip!
