The big day had come, something the locals had been talking about for the few weeks leading up to it. 'The show' really was the talk of the town, people even paid to go to their GP to ask for a sick note so that they could attend. Unfortunately Greg was on nights so Claire was representing the Cleggles crew at the show. The agricultural and pastoral (A&P) show is a once yearly event, sporting all things countryside.
We had made some new friends, we had got wind that there was another British couple that were fresh off the boat. Sean, a physiotherapist in the hospital, originally from Bolton and Lauren, a maths teacher on the hunt for a job out here, originally from Sheffield.
We'd got our hands on the show timetable, so we made sure we were there by 10:15am to attend and enjoy the 'Ovation Boner of The Year' competition. Within five minutes we decided we were supporting Chad, Sean was particularly keen to ensure the rest of the tent was aware that we were keen for Chad to win. We learnt quite a lot about boning too...Ovation has 75 boners who bone 2100 lambs a day. Unfortunately despite the care Chad took over his boning and the minimal mess he left, he wasn't crowned the champion to our disappointment.
We then paid Lauren a visit, who had managed to land herself a job on the laughing clown stand at the fayre. She was in her element, handing out cheap plastic toys to small children in exchange for an extortionate amount of cash.
The show was everything Claire expected and more, from children doing highland dancing, a knitting competition, sheep shearing and a really quite scary man with performing dogs and ponies. Claire's favourite by far though was the wood chopping. The tension pre-chop was intense as the five burly men prepared to chop like they'd never chopped before. It was a speed competition, the first to chop through their wood block was the winner, there were axes and wood literally flying everywhere, the excitement was similar to that of a 100m final.
