Budapest, a tale of two cities, and not just the historical Buda and Pest. We arrived after dark due to delayed trains and therefore our first experience of Pest, in the Budapest 8 district was one of people drinking outside off-licences (plural) whilst we searched for the supermarket. Needless to say, that despite a beautiful flat, Chris and I were nervous of what was to come. However, Budapest during the day is sublime. Over the two days we joined a free walking tour, hired a cycle car to explore St Margaret's Island (why aren't these a thing?! I loved it - though they may not work so well on the hills of Bath), hiked up to the castle (not on Castle Hill), entered St Steven's Basilica and walked to Hero's Square and back.
On our way back to Budapest 8 on our first day we did a prayer walk for the area. We approached our flat from a different direction on the second day and found the walk just as heart wrenching. I know the situation must be the same in capitals the world over (including London). It is as Jesus said "The poor will always be with us".
