As we stepped off the platform at Dombühl, we could taste the fresh air. The station was basic, without even a toilet, but that was because the village it served was so small. We had to walk 20 minutes to another hamlet, in which our Air B&B was a beautiful fairy-tale cottage.
There isn't a lot to do out here except enjoy the stunning countryside which suits us to a tee. We walked a lot (the nearest place to get food was over two hours away) and got lost a couple of times. Lucy's favourite was the 18 kilometre walk back from Rothenberg, which went on till after dark, hence the moon rise photos. Whereas Chris preferred the walk in the woods, as we followed what looked exactly like the St George's flag all the way home.
One thing we both noticed was the language barrier was far harder. Few out here know English and our German only got up to GCSE level and that's now a distant memory. We have been spoken to and addressed like locals, only to have to work out what was going on, with mixed results. One group of builders made a joke about superman in reaction to a t-shirt I was wearing and it was only after having laughed with them that I worked out he was saying that he wished he were superman as the job would only take 5 minutes.
