Wills and James Road Trip
Day Twenty-two 05.04.05
James thought it would be a good idea to pack up the awning in the morning and not last night when it was nice and dry. It rained all night and the tent was very wet in the morning, although it had stopped raining by now it was very overcast and the tent wasn't going to dry out in a hurry. The plan today was to pack up quickly and go to the Guggenheim on the way to the next campsite.
The campsite we were at wasn't very nice so rather than wait for the tent to dry we packed it up wet which was a real pain. We drove into Bilboa (by now we were experts) and found our usual parking spot not too far from the museum. We knew it would be open as this time we had done our homework. We even helped a Dutch couple and a French man decipher the parking meter.
The Guggenheim building really is fantastic we picked up complementary headsets and used them to take a tour of the building inside and out as well as using it for the exhibitions. The architect was Frank O. Gehry and he has used titanium, limestone and glass to create a truly magnificent building. As you can tell the building did outshine the contents. There was a few pieces of modern art which were interesting but there was also a very large exhibition on Aztec artefacts. Whilst these were also interesting they became a bit dull after the first few hundred exhibits.
The highlight for us both was the puppy outside the museum. It is a four storey high puppy dog which is covered in live multi coloured pansies. This was a temporary exhibit that proved so popular with city residents that it was retained as a permanent feature.
After the Guggenheim we were off again to find our next destination. We had read about Cuevas De Altamira. Within these caves there are pre historic paintings by cavemen dating from before 18000bc. There is a nearby camping ground to base ourselves to explore them. On arrival at Altamira Camping Park we realised that the photographs in the guide had been very generous and the site was in fact really rubbish.
We drove on just a bit further into Santillana del Mar which is lovely and we have found an excellent site within walking distance of the village and museum about the pre historic paintings.
