Wills and James Road Trip
Day Forty 23.4.05
We drove to Lagos today, it was market day and we finally managed to park on the outskirts of the town. We had a walk around the bustling market, the highlight of which was seeing a woman man-handling a poor chicken. It looked as though she was trying to determine its weight. A bit like in Little Britain when Marjorie had forgotten the scales. The chicken was protesting loudly and we felt like buying it just to set it free.
We later found the municipal museum and duly paid our 2 euros entrance fee. Inside was an eclectic mix of artefacts of Lagos life right from the stone age to present day. It was interesting to look at and the interpretation wasn't bad. In the final room there was chapel. This was particularly stunning with fresco ceiling and finely carved gold gilt alter. All around the room were painted panels depicting various religious scenes. One in particular showed a man who confessed to a priest that he had kicked his mother, the priest told him that any foot that kicked a mother should be chopped off. The priest hadn't meant for the man to take this literally but he went home and chopped his own foot off. The scene was quite graphic and showed the priest sticking the foot back on.
We then went to the Fortaleza Ponta Da Bandeira (Fort of Nossa Senhora da Penha de Franca) across the road and paid another 2 euros each. The fort was built as a gateway to the sea and also to provide protection for the city of Lagos. This was not as good value as the first museum and our visit was short lived.
We took a walk around the extensive new marina where we were accosted several times by trip sellers to see caves, dolphins, fish, city tours and country tours. Deciding not to take them up on their temping offers we went to Praia da Rocha instead to look at the beach. The weather was a bit overcast so we sat and watched the surfers taking advantage of the rougher sea. We then took a walk along the beach as far as James' feet could bare. (walking on the soft sand was hard work and walking on the wooden boardwalk was rough, shoes were impractical as kept having to take them off and put them back on.)
Got back and had home made chicken kebabs (chicken was from supermarket not market)
