Saz's Canadian Odyssey
So as expected the bus journey from Luxor to Cairo was RUBBISH! Was promised a direct trip (I would have taken the train but it was booked solid for 4 days) but we stopped for 30 mins at midnight so had a cup of tea and watched Bad Boys 2 on the tv and when I got back on, some bloody woman had nicked my window seat!! So got no sleep at all and it didn't help when they put some rubbish arabic comedy on at 2am!! Arrived in Cairo at 7am in not the best of moods!!
Had a sleep then a wander and I didn't think it possible but, yes, the men here are even more leery than in Luxor. Makes me feel sick!! Went to the Egyptian Museum in the afternoon which was pretty impressive but so many things in there didn't have tags on or anything to explain what they were! I had really wanted to see the Tutankhmun section with all the bits from his tomb and it didn't disappoint! Amazing how much stuff he had in there with him. Saw the famous solid gold death mask and even though there were lots of big signs saying no photographs, of course the frenchies were at it, till the guard caught them!! Also went into the Royal Mummy room which was quite wierd - loads of dead bodies! Fascinating though and I got to see my old friend Ramses II with his big hooked nose - goes with his arrogant nature I think! Not sure I agree with them all being on show like that though. Don't think all those kings would look down kindly eh!
This morning I went to see the Pyramids at 3 different places. At Darhsur I went inside the Red Pyramid which was completely airless and went down really deep into the pyramid where the mummy was found. The Bent Pyramid was next although inside was closed for restoration. Interesting how they got the angle wrong to start with.. Then on to Giza where all the coach parties and camel/horse/donkey touts are. So many people there but the two main pyramids are awesome and definitely worth going to see - especially from the viewpoint. And of course I saw the Sphinx which apparently has the stone form of cancer so go see it while you can before it disintegrates!
This afternoon i've booked my bus ticket for tomorrow morning to go to the Bahariyya oasis from where i'm hoping to do a camping trip into the desert. It will be great to get out of the city!! There are no road rules here and the in the last taxi I took, we got bumped twice!
I have much to write on the women of Egypt but don't have the energy right now! A subject which both fascinates and angers me....
