From Cape Town we flew back to Johannesburg and straight onto the bus to take us to Sun City. We were to stay at The Palace the most opulent place we have ever stayed in.
Sun City was rumored to have been set up by rich white South African men as a place well away where they could gamble and entertain doubtful women without fear of creating a scandal. The place oozes 'over the top' in every way. Massive hotels, casino, golf course with crocodiles, water skiing, ball rooms, bowls green and the list goes on. It even has an artificial wave that can be surfed on!.
Next door to Sun City is the Pilanesberg Game reserve, we took a tour through on the back of a truck. This was our first taste of African wild life and it was awesome and great fun. We were fortunate enough to see warthog, giraffe, leopard, rhino, gazelle, zebra and get some great video footage. (if you ignore the gibberish of onboard experts trying to outdo the guide)
We hired a car in Sun City and left on Aug 11 driving to Ficksburg and staying at the Bella Rosa B&B. When we told other patrons at the B&B's bar that our next stop was to be Lesotho they advised us not to take the car owing to the number of car jackings happening. It's pretty scary when a South African tells you somewhere is too dangerous to visit!
