When talking to travellers about our lost luggage, a common question was "Did your luggage transit through Nairobi?" When we answered, Yes, there were lots of stories about luggage never found again. "Nairobbery" is well known!
As soon as we arrived in Nairobi, after clearing customs, we went straight to the lost luggage section and met some very helpful staff. However they proceeded to take us on a bewildering and despairing journey through mountainous piles of lost luggage in different sections of the airport to see if we could physically identify our luggage. So many people's holiday plans gone astray were represented by these huge piles of unclaimed luggage. We had already looked through the correspondingly high piles in Addis Ababa.
We left instructions that if it turned up in the next 5 days for it to be sent to the travel agent in Tanzania who we had organized our safari through (Sunny Safaris). What was helpful was one of the lost luggage chaps phoned a booking through for the bus to Arusha in Tanzania to pick us up and we were on our way to Tanzania for our long awaited safari to the Serengeti.

heatheravan Re: Nairobi (or NAIROBBERY as travellers know it) Hi Antonia, Sorry we came across as negative, this was not our intention, we try to just write about what we experienced. We also find plenty in our country which is not perfect. We have in fact loved each of our visits to Africa (we are in Egypt now). We also acknowledge that the airport people were polite and helpful and as later written about our luggage did in fact turn up. Cheers Avan & Heather
