Well as not planned we didnt end up getting to Byron Bay as the campervan swap was much later than we expected so it got dark pretty quick. We needed to use the meat we had bought so we decided to stop at the side of the road in one of the rest areas. As this was the 2nd time we had done it we knew what to expect so it was ok. The only thing was we were trying to make stew and as we couldnt have the doors or windows open incase all the bugs and flies got it we were cooking with no clothes on and still dripping!!! An interesting task to say the least. The next morning we got up what we thought was early. Not so early as the other people that had stayed that night had pavcked up and left! We decided to have a look at Port McQuarie and Coffs Harbour to see what was there. At Port M we went to a Koala Hopsital where we read sad stories about some of the koala that had been brought it but it was also nice knowing what a difference the hospital makes to them. Unfortunately most of the Koalas were sleeping but it was still nice to see them in their trees! When we got to Coffs Harbour we had something to eat and as there wasnt much there other than beaches we decided to head upto Byron. We had found out the price was $25 per person rather than per vechicle a night at the campsite Danielle and Tom were at so wer came up with a plan. We booked in for 1 person (Carina) and just before we got to the campsite David hid in the roof of the van behind where the bedding is kept, a very tight spot!!!!! The plan did work and it was interesting me (Carina) driving in as I hadnt driven the campervan yet plus its an automatic!! The next day we headed to the beach and town area to check out surfing prices. We found a place called Black Dog and managed to haggle the price down to $45 each which is half the price we were expecting to pay. We headed off down to the beach with the instructor. The first part of the lesson was on sand, its easy to look cool when youre on a board on hard ground! Next we got thrown in at the deep end, literally. As there was only the 4 of us it meant we had to work extra hard, and that was made even harder with the drifting currents and sandbanks which pulled us about 1km down the beach from where we started. The only way back to where we started was walk!!! We all managed to get up and stay up right into the beach. We also fell off surprise surprise and during this we got battered by waves, boards and swallowed several gallons of sea water. Nice and salty!! After a 3 hour lesson we were all very tired and just about ready to collapse. We soon got woken up when we found out the instructor had lost the van key and inside was our money, cards and cameras. Luckily when we got up to the car park the van was there with the bag of our belongings. He had a spare key so we quickly took some pictures and headed back. We didnt manage to get any pics of us surfing or on the beach for obvious reasons. Remind us to tell you the funny story when we get back!!!! There wast much else of Byron to see so the next day we went round the town for a bit and then off we headed to Gold Coast.
