Today, I went to the Minster, York's Cathedral. There were lots of stained glass windows showing scenes from the Bible and English history. There were graves in the floor and they were playing a really big pipe organ. I went down to the crypt, where I saw the original Roman Forte and later Norman church remains, on which the Minster is built.Theses ruins were found when they dug down to reinforce the foundations of the Cathedral. There was the remains of a pillar showing the stone masons' trademarks, an early form of graffiti. It also housed the Treasury that holds all of the church's valuable silverware and stuff. It was fascinating. I then climbed 275 steps to the top of the central tower. It was a very steep and narrow spiral stone staircase, at one point only 65 cm wide, even I could only just fit through.
After lunch we went to the National Railway Museum. There were lots of vintage steam trains, including the Mallard, on which Gill's Grandad was a fireman (the one shovelling the coal in to the furnase at over 1 ton an hour) as well as a Japanese Bullet train and a massive steam loco from China. They had many carrages from the royal trains. Uncle Ian and I went on the train simulator. It took us on the train journey from London to Brighton in 4 minutes. It was the best, we went 700 miles/hour.
My favourite thing today was climbing the tower.
