I woke up at 4am today, because I have jetlag.
We started today at the Jorvik Viking Center, it's in the Coppergate Shopping Center. When they built this mall they dug up lots of viking bones, relics and even poo still in the loo, it had all been preserved because the ground was wet and airless. We rode in a time machine back to 900 AD, when the vikings were here. Ia viking village complete with the smells of the time. I got to try on some viking helmets and hold some swords. I was also lucky enough to get a viking coin made.
Uncle Ian and I climbed Cliffords Tower, there was a good view of York from the top. This tower was once a part of York Castle. A long time ago a group of Jews took refuge here and took their own lives rather than convert to Christianity. I got to stand in the fireplace and there was a model of how the castle and tower once looked.
We then carried on to the York Castle Museum, housed in the old city prisons and couthouse, whose most famous prisoner was the highwayman, d*** Turpin. A lot of the museum was about life in Victorian times. Some of the other displays were about life in York, the civil war and the improvements in many household items, including the toilet. We got to visit the original cells, even the condemned cell. The 1960's display got the oldies excited. There were lots of cool things like guns and helmets.
We drove out in to the country for dinner, but all that walking made me tired and I slept all the way there and back.
