Fri 28th Feb
Long boring, uncomfy day of travel, but still better than expected. Everything I'd read and heard from others was it could take up to 12 hrs, road closures, road works etc etc. But we left at 8:30 from Flores, couple of stops for coffee/toilet break, and lunch, but then arrived into Lanquin at 5.
Nice hotel with pool, bar, restaurant, hammocks overlooking jungle etc, and only £11 each per night ! But as per our recent luck, cold and rainy :(
Sat 29th Feb
Still raining when we got up so had leisurely morning then caught a 4x4 pickup truck at 10:30 to head to Semuc Champney. We both had a 'happy travelling' reflection riding in this bumpy truck, open air, standing up, clinging on with the locals, riding through the rain forest - we're in Guatemala, riding along a dirt track to this site, in the middle of nowhere that takes a day to get here, and another to get out - surreal.
Walked up to the mirador and had a proper "oh wow" experience - we've seen photos and read how amazing it is meant to be, but this really is unreal - like nothing we've ever seen.
Walked back down and swam in each of the levels of pools, each one getting more and more empty of people until we had the whole stunning turquoise pools to ourselves. Out of this world stunning, even with cloudy skies, even better than Tikal and Lost City I'm afraid to say !
Another bumpy fun "feeling alive" ride back to hotel for 5, just as it started to rain again.
Real shame it wasn't blue skies and hot so we could also do the cave tour and tubing down the river, but it was still incredible and worth the trip.
