Tues 25th Feb
Long day of travel today to get from Bogota, to Guatemala City, and up to Flores.
Taxi to airport at 8:30, and surprisingly little traffic so arrived at 9am. Caught the 12:05 flight to Guatemala City, arriving at 2:30 local time (1hr behind Colombia).
Sat in very tiny airport with nothing to do until next flight up to Flores at 6:30pm. But they did have free wifi so used that for research, uploading things etc.
Short 1hr flight, then quick 10min taxi to hotel on the tiny little island of Flores, finally arriving at 8pm. Checked in and dashed out for a quick dinner before things closed. Checked the weather forecast and saw that our plan for going to Tikal on Thursday was going to be scuppered by forecasted rain, so mad panic to quickly book the 6am tour for tomorrow (at 10pm at night) - never booked anything so last minute !
Wed 26th Feb
Up at 5am for the 6am bus to Tikal. 1.5hr journey there, and our group of "6-8 people" somehow became 28 on the English tour ! But the guide was really good, very informative and interesting, and got us round the massive site, to all the main areas, shortcuts through jungle etc.
The heat started to get pretty intense, and what with long day yesterday, and 5am start, we were really flagging by the end of the tour, so caught the 12:30 shuttle back.
Had a great lunch by the lake - huge chicken sandwich&chips, with a banana&nutella icecream milkshake - with a full sized donut on top !!
Wandered round the tiny little island, then sat and watched sunset from the amazing roof terrace of our hotel with some beers.
Headed out for Happy Hour cocktails for a few hours, but when we came to pay, an older couple from Alaska had already paid our bill ! We went over to thank them, and ask why, and they said it looked like we were very happy and having a lovely time, and were just "paying it forward". What a lovely gesture.
Went to a great local place for dinner, sitting outside on plastic table & chairs, for steak and ribs, cooked right next to us on the grill, on a beautifully warm evening. Wow, its going to be tough to leave this idyllic place and travelling mode !
Thurs 27th
Nice relaxing day with no plans, and morning of rain and clouds so nothing to do ! Got some laundry done, had great brunch at "Cool Beans" of waffles, and french toast with fruit. Got some provisions in for our loooong bus ride tomorrow. late lunch at 3pm, souvenir shopping, beers on the roof terrace, more cocktails and dinner from same place last night.
Not a bad first few days in Guatemala, and have loved Flores and our beautiful hotel Casazul.
