On Saturday morning, before leaving for the catacombs, we told the kids that when they finished their cereal they could each have a boiled egg. Once everyone was done eating we lifted the lid off of a small pot, inside were 6 kinder eggs. We told the kids we had a surprise for them, and the clue was in their eggs. They opened their chocolate eggs and a popular European comic book figure, Oblisk, was inside. Darius has read one of the comics so he was familiar with a few of the characters. Our surprise was a trip the following day to Park Asterix near Paris. The kids were over the moon excited. Park Asterix is comparable to Disneyland, but with different themes. Paris Disney didn't have the big roller coasters, and there seemed to be a larger variety of rides at Asterix. The locals we talked to said they liked it better too, so we chose Park Asterix.
Being Father's Day we told Tim to stay in bed while the kids and I got breakfast ready, and put out a few gifts for him.
Everyone was excited to get to the amusement park which made breakfast quick. We drove for 40 minutes, arriving at the park by 10:00.
We bought our tickets in advance online, so all we had to do on arrival was scan a barcode on our iPhone, and we went straight in. The themes in park Asterix are Vikings, Romans, Greeks, Egyptians and Gauls.
Asterix, high on top of a mountain, is the first thing you notice when entering, and then all the Gaul village replicas with gift shops. Walking further we saw entrances to "Rome", and "Greece". An impressive roller coaster caught Tim and the boy's attention. They quickly got in line but were soon disappointed when Darius was just barely too short for the height restriction. The line-ups also seemed long so we weren't sure if the day would turn out as we hoped.
We made our way to the Egyptian area. This is where we found an even better roller coaster, called "Ozlris". The track is above the rider, so the view is unobstructed. This also means the riders legs hang out while they zip around inverted loops, spirals, and at one point go underground through a tunnel of mist. Because the restraints are more advanced Darius had the green light to go! Phew! The rest of the rides were the same so we were relieved that Darius didn't have to miss out.
I pushed myself and rode things I normally wouldn't - I have a picture to prove it. As we came down the massive drop on the log ride a camera catches my terror face, and Tim had to buy the picture. Too funny!
Belia loved going on the "culdrons", similar to the teacups at Disney. We rode a small roller coaster, a scenic boat ride looking at Asterix characters, and a high cart on a track that looks over Asterix land. Belia was reassuring me on the high one lol. We had a laugh attack on the pirate ships that spin while going up and down.
Together our family went on a really fast tube ride, down rapids, spinning at the same time.
Mariah, Brennin and Darius convinced me to go on "The Grande Splash", a conveyer belt pulled our boat up a huge slope. Then a nice boat ride is interrupted by what sounds like a bomb, ending in a huge splash that drenched us. After some more drifting the boat goes over a waterfall splashing into the pool below. It was a blast!
Tim was excited to ride the wooden roller coaster, which they got Mariah to go on. The anticipation had her scared to tears, but once it was going she loved it.
We stayed at the park till it closed at 7:00. It was a great day! Tim's best Father's Day yet.
