Thursday - The 4-wheel drive picked us up at 7:20 and we picked up another couple from another motel at 8:00. Then we went on a river cruise and saw one itsy bitsy crocodile 1 year old. Some birds called frogmouths and nightjars. Then we got back into the 4 wheel drive and we stopped to look at the biggest fern in the world. Then we stopped at a creek and had donuts and tea. Then we crossed the creek bouncing up and down. Among the red mud there were signs to watch for cassowaries but none, none at all. Too bad.
At the stop by the creek we walked over tree roots. There was a vine that was skimming the top of the water. There was a tree that was holding onto a palm tree. Then we stopped on the side of the road and looked out at the sea where there were only a few big mangroves out in the sea. So we drove down to the beach, looked at the view and then drove to some falls where there were really neat plants that were very sensitive. When you touched them the folded up and played dead.
There was a few aboriginal carvings on a rock and the falls were beautiful. On the way back we saw a huge spider that was BIG. His body was about as big as my dad's thumb. We stopped at a bend int he road. We looked for crocodiles in the ricer below, but no luck. We headed on to a lunch spot where dad and I went swimming in a creek next to the lunch spot. We swam to a cascade which was much warmer than the creek. For lunch we had bread, cheese, sushi and lots and lots of bits and pieces. We found a prawn which was a couple inches long.
The was a man who had a Canadian flag. We found out he was from Edmonton very near to us. He also did a few things with my mum, even though she didn't realize it. The tour guide Bill showed us some rocks which when wetted and rubbed on rocks would show colours. Eg. Red, orange, yellow. These rocks were used by aboriginals.
Then we jumped back into the truck and headed off to another beach. But before we got there we saw a strangler fig where all the fig vines were strangling the tree. It was BIG and very neat. At the beach there were ghost crabs that were digging holes so they rolled up a little ball of sand an dumped it outside their hole. I wrote a sign saying 'ghost crabs be careful of flying sand balls'. Then we got back into the truck and went to an icecream shop where we got four different kinds of icecream. One of the people said that a wombat could fit into an 8 inch hole. He said it was 'twew he looked it up on the wowld wide web'. HA like a great big ruddy wombat could fit into an 8 inch hole.
(The roots from the strangler fig went further out into the rainforest than 100 meters. I went into the pool for a long time. In the pool on the other side is a mould of a real crocodile! It's amazing. It's soooooooo BIG!!!)
