Our last day of the cruise was an even earlier start than previous, the morning excursion was before breakfast. We landed on Magdalena island with a magnificent sunrise. Then we had around an hour to say hello to the Magellanic penguins. A month ago, there was around 6000 here and in another month, there will be none as they swim north to warmer regions of Chile. We were concerned that we might not see many and maybe only a fleeting glimpse. We needn't have worried, we didn't count them, but apparently there was around 2000 and we didn't need binoculars. Can't quite express the joy we felt to see so many penguins in their natural habitat going about their daily business with no care or interest in all us orange clad invaders. The cruise had already exceeded our expectations and with this last excursion and the best sunrise throughout the voyage it just got even better. Our last hearty breakfast after returning to the ship, then time to pack - boo hoo. A few hours later we arrived in Punta Arenas with grey skies and rain. We ummed and ahhed about whether to go on the cruise because of the cost (even with the discounted tickets) but we are so glad we did. No complaints at all, we were looked after so well, the scenery, excursions, food and crew were all fabulous. In fact, our room cleaner went the extra mile to put a smile on our faces, we enquired about him but couldn't find any other passengers with the same experience. When we returned to our room in the afternoon of day 1, the room had been cleaned and on the bed was a day pack, with a trekking pole either side and gloves holding the trekking poles, on day 2 after lunch we came back to a waterproof coat on the bed zipped up, wearing a hat, sunglasses, life vest and the cuffs tucked into gloves, on day 3 our cabin was cleaned whilst we were out on an excursion so the cleaner had nothing to decorate our bed with. We did wonder whether he would rummage in the wardrobe and layout knickers and bra but he didn't go that far thank goodness. Whilst having dinner he did however come in and turn down the bed, switch on the bedside lights and lay on the bed certificates to prove we had visited cape horn along with some gloves holding them and a hat and sunglasses. This guy is obviously happy in his work. Talking to one of the guides there is only one cleaner who does this. We disembarked with our exclusive lapel badges, our free Australis drink bottles, great memories and lots of new friends. The cruise proved to be a great decision.
