We shared breakfast with Alix from Devon. Her trip was almost over and she was low on cash, but on finding out we were going rafting in the afternoon she decided to join us. After being bussed out to Ko Kayak's HQ we were kitted out in wet suits, life vests and neoprene boots and headed for Rio Petrohue with the raft. There was only 4 of us plus our instructor Stan and safety man Richard who would follow us in a kayak. Stan recently sea kayaked from Puerto Williams (near Ushuaia) to Cape Horn and back - wow what an undertaking (that's where we went on our recent cruise). Donna missed out on kayaking back in Valle Grande as she was suffering with a cold, she was not well again but was determined to give it a go. Ignoring the rafting we both did near Llangollen many years ago that was just up and down a short and tame section of river this would-be Donna's first 'real' rafting experience - would she love it or hate it? It had been another grey morning but by the time we reached the river to set off in the raft we had great views of several volcanoes. The weather and scenery were outstanding, shame we didn't have our camera. Stan was happy with the conditions especially as it was his last rafting trip for the season, he was heading back to France to see his son. Ko kayaks camera man didn't turn up, so Richard in the safety kayak made several stops downstream of us to take some photos. Thanks Richard for emailing us the photos free of charge and to Alix for also sending us pics off her Go-pro camera. We were soon into the rapids and we all got a soaking - waves just hitting us straight in the mush. Donna was beaming from ear to ear, laughing and loving it. Once in a calm section of river, Stan invited us to get out of the raft and into the water. Donna decided she would rather stay in the raft but the invite was really an instruction! We all had to go in to practice getting back in the raft should we fall out in the rapids! Now we were properly wet, thank goodness we had wet suits and booties on. More rapids followed by a stop and a walk up to a rocky viewpoint. Then we were invited to jump from a height to plunge into the river below, this time it was in invite though so Donna declined. Alix went first, followed by me and then our 4th crew member whose name escapes me. It was so good the 3 of us jumped off for a second time. Donna watched and said 'No way'. Back in the raft for more rapids with the wildest section left for last. We all had a great time getting wet, can't believe how much Donna was laughing each time we smashed into the water and got a face full. Back to the HQ, quick change and then complimentary beers and pizza - top hole. We must do this again sometime.
