We are back in Chile where our South America adventure started. We had only been on the water for 4 days but even so it was a bit of a shock to be in a city. Same as in Argentina, stray dogs everywhere (mainly asleep), cars, noise, pedestrians - the serenity of the cruise was gone, the drivers here do stop at pedestrian crossings though. We had already booked one night in a hostel and what a strange place it turned out to be - glad it was only one night. It was a bit of a comedown from the ship. The room was even smaller than one we stayed in at Ushuaia (not Ada's the other one). The bathroom was so compact you could sh#t, shower and shave all at the same time. The hostel seemed like a ghost town - where was everyone (including the staff)? It had a kitchen we could use but after inspecting it we chose not to. We dined out, but searched for something cheap. Another expensive place. Pizza and a coke to share - one course not four and no free booze! Back to our room, the door was matchstick wood with a hole kicked part way through it, the door handles hanging off and a massive gap under it. There was a cuddly draught excluder for the gap but it was so grimey that previous occupants had moved it outside. At least it was warm in there. Breakfast was a poor affair, a member of staff was actually there but she just stared at us continually whilst we ate. The coffee was absolutely dreadful and the bread was like cardboard. We had a slow walk to the bus station where we bumped into our German cruise friends from Berchtesgarden - they had tickets for the same bus as us. Hopefully the hostel we have booked for 3 nights at Puerto Natales will be better. Let's get out of here!
