At last we withdrew enough cash out to pay for the truck camper. Friday 1st June, we headed off to West Vancouver, we handed the money over. Then Headed to the BCAA office (British Colombia Automobile Association) with Rene (the seller) and in one foul swoop the vehicle ownership was transferred, re-registered, new license plates issued (that's how they do it here), insurance and breakdown cover taken out. All in one office with one person - amazingly efficient. Thanks to Rob, Jools, and my parents we had a scan of our UK insurers letter confirming we had 9 years no claims - this gave us a 40 % discount on the Insurance. Back to Rene's to empty our hire car and fill the camper. Rene gave us a refresher on the gas, electrics, etc. Rene and his wife Lynn also threw in some extras - a box of tools, towels, tee towels, plates, dishes, cutlery, glasses, pots, pans, jump leads, extra spark plug leads, electrical hook up extension cable, water container, a sat nav, and more. Rene & Lynn ensured that we set off well prepared and well informed. They weren't too happy about selling 'Tilly' the truck camper to us but had moved into an apartment and it was too tall for the underground parking. Parking on the road in West Vancouver is problematic as you can only leave a vehicle in the same spot for 72 hours. Rene hadn't wasted any time, since we paid the deposit he had been out and bought a used VW camper which will fit in their underground parking - their touring days are not over. Donna hopped into the hire Jeep and I took the controls of our new home. Traffic to get to the hire car depot was no better than rush hour at home. After dropping off and filling up with gas (petrol) we finally set off in Tilly at around 2pm. We still had to get out of Vancouver, progress was slow. We were hoping to get to Manning Park in the mountains but settled for Abbotsford. It was still a built-up area but not quite in the city. Our first night went smooth. No problems with the water or electricity hook ups, got the gas on okay and spent best part of an hour finding a place to store all our possessions, food and booze! Donna rustled up a great dinner. We have no TV so we will be reading a lot (something we didn't found much time for in South America). After a good night sleep, we awoke to start our 4-wheeled adventure proper. I was the one who wasn't keen to drive our hire car but Donna is the one who is biding her time to drive Tilly. A few hours drive and we were well and truly in the mountains, there was plenty of snow either side of the road as we neared our destination. We parked up at Lightning Lake camp ground in Manning park. We were quite surprised to find the campground had only opened yesterday for the summer season and there is still snow here also - just random piles remaining from where it has been cleared off the pitches and access trail. Had a bash at putting the awning up and took the porta potty apart (before we make any deposits). Not venturing outside in the dark to play with the bears! We have already seen 'Bear Aware' signs and there are plenty of instructions here about food and bears! Great to sit outside in the fresh air, peaceful and quiet and cool beers in the fridge. Getting our boots on tomorrow and hopefully hiring a canoe. This is the life - we are both very happy now. Donna loves Tilly - can't quite believe that in a week we have succeeded in securing our new home on wheels (for the next 6 months hopefully).
