We had been promised sunshine but instead it was a grey gloomy day. The weather here is as unpredictable as back home. A short drive south to the Peyto Lake parking area - oh my goodness where did all these people come from! At Waterfowl Lakes campground there was hardly a soul in sight, at this carpark there must have been 50 or more cars already with more coming in every minute and then there was a separate coach park. We joined the masses for a 10 minute walk to the viewpoint of the turquoize waters of Peyto Lake. The scenery was great but there certainly wasn't any piece and quiet. We headed uphill through the trees away from the crowds possibly towards the bears! The trail opened up to give us another view of the lake and mountains but we didn't have to jostle to get a crowd free photo. We savoured the solitude and serenity before returning to the chaos of the carpark. Our next stop was our major feature for the day - Bow Glacier Falls. We could see the falls miles away when we pulled up and it seemed we would be walking for hours in trees before reaching the falls which didn't look too impressive. The trail started at a lodge / café / gift shop and the coach parties had descended. We started on the lake shore path just to escape the masses. We were pleasantly surprised by the trail and just kept on going until we were finally standing below vertical cliffs from which the waterfall cascaded downwards. It was decided chilly and there was a hint of rain in the air so we didn't linger. We ventured further south in Tilly to Lake Louise. The campsite said full but we still joined the booking in queue. This is one site that you can book - if you have wifi and if you know when you expect to arrive! Someone had cancelled their booking, they had a spot for us. They could only give us 2 nights but it was a start. The sun made an appearance and I made an executive decision to barbeque. We weren't allowed to have a fire, so cooking outside was a cold affair. Warm afternoons are swiftly followed by cold evenings. I cooked outside but we ate indoors. More about Lake Louise in our next post - promise!
