When I think about the middle of nowhere, Cober Pedy comes to mind. Its one of the most unique and baron places I have ever visited. We first go to the visitors centre where we meet Cheryl and Andy, a lovely couple who have been travelling for some time. We talk for a while and soak up the wealth of information they have about travelling to offer. We exchange details in hope of catching up with them down the track in Aice Springs. We went to the "Old Timers Mine" and had a look at how Miners lived many years ago. We also visited an underground church which was amazing. Cameron was keen on trying a bit of "noodling" (a cool word for fossicking) opals. It wasn't long before Cameron was waist deep in a hole, which by the way he had dug himself. Opal fever had hit and before long we were all spending the money in our mind from the massive opal we were about to find.
A visit to the underground Desert Park Hotel gave us a history of opal mining in Cober Pedy. Its mind boggling how people survived in this harsh environment, so long ago. I am sure the hope of striking it rich is what got them through.
The next day we headed off to the NT border, it was so nice to see our new friends Cheryl and Andy along with Di and Wayne at the border camp. We were able to share a few travelling stories and have a laugh. As we did not have any drinks with us, we headed to Kulgera 16km away to get some beers. I nearly had heart failure when a six pack of beers and a six pack of strongbow's came to $68!!
