June 6:
Today was our first day in Windjana Gorge, and we did two walks. One that was seven kilometres and had freshwater crocodiles living on the river beds. Then the other one was a two kilometre walk through a tunnel with thigh deep wades. Unlike any of the Gorges we’ve been to Windjana is made from Limestone, this is because his used to be a reef and this was all under water. The first sign on the walk said we had to find a sea creature from millions of years ago that had been fossilised into the limestone wall. Also on that wall were little pieces of coral hanging down from the wall. Near that sign is were mummy spotted the first group of crocs. There were about thirteen of them in that one group just bunch up collecting heat from the sun. The trees that we were walking through had such green leaves that it was almost a fluorescent colour. The big cliffs were also pretty, they were made of limestone which had was really smooth to touch. Later on in the walk we went down on the riverbed and came up close to a crocodile. You probably won’t believe me but we were 2 metres away from it! We came to the end of the walk and had a little snack and turned back for another 3.5 km. We came back and had a salami, cheese and lettuce wrap for lunch and Cam, Stu and I played a bit of soccer and tied 3 all. After the “ hair raising” match we went for a two kilometre walk through a place called Tunnel Creek. It is a long walk that has permanent water pools and also stalactites. The water that we waded through came up to my thighs, but for Stuey it was almost wetting his backpack. When we got to the end another family said that a lady had told her there was aboriginal artworks up around the ends corner. So we went up there and saw some handprints and images of people or a tribe even. Then we came back after a big 9 km walk to have sausage sandwiches for dinner.
