Back in town I had a nap and chilled out, it was my last night with Mathilde and Ea, who were off to Panama the next day. As a result the others were all drinking, but I only had a beer or two because I had to be up early for diving the next day.
In the morning I put my head through the door of 2 rather hungover Danish girls to say my goodbyes if they had gone by the time I finished diving before getting a taxi to a 5* hotel where the dive company were based with Laura.
Here we also met Greg, who had been on Playa Blanca with us and the 3 of us set off with some other divers on the boat for 45 minutes until we reached the first dive spot.
At the very start of the dive we saw Juan (our guide) kill 2 lion fish, as they are an invasive species in the Caribbean and harming the ecosystem. It was very cool the way he would spear them, stab them and then leave them as food for the other creatures of the reef. In this instance it happened to include a small moral eel that enjoyed the breakfast we put on for him.
Soon after we swam away from the coral reef and after a little while realised why as we came across a shipwreck 20m underwater. The site was very impressive and eerie, and as we came around the front we saw that there was another smaller ship lying parallel to it as well. We swam around the outside of both wrecks looking for life, and killing more lion fish on the way before I stopped for a pose with the metal statue that had also been placed between the wrecks.
Soon after we entered the larger shipwreck itself, once inside we were guided to one end where there was a small air pocket and all took off out masks and regulators for a brief chat at 20m underwater inside a shipwreck - its not every day you get to say you did that!
We got our gear back on and then swam through the back of the wreck through the corridors and entered one or two of the rooms on either side before exiting at the rear of the ship, it was one of the most surreal experiences of my life and not one I will forget in a hurry. After we made our way back towards the reef and back to the surface.
Keeping with tradition in the Caribbean we stopped for a spot of lunch on a deserted beach before we got back in the boat and headed to the next dive spot. The next dive was also very cool, but a mot more usual. I did see a giant crab though and we took out lots more lion fish, there was also rather strangely a car lying at the bottom of the sea, although I am not entirely sure how it got there, but it has certainly been there for a while!
In the afternoon I said my final goodbye to Mathilde and Ea who were now getting on the boat to Panama. Afterwards I had a siesta and then I went out in the evening with Diana for drinks. We met a couple of her friends at a bar, but they were not drinking. I had a couple of beers, whilst Diana had tucked into 3 Margaritas. Afterwards we went for a walk through the old town and it wasn't long before the margaritas decided to make a reappearance in one of the main plazas. However, rather than go home a little worse for wear the decision was made to stay in the park until all effects of alcohol had diminished so that a dignified and sobre lady could return home instead. Having only had 3 small beers I, along with a few taxi drivers who were located nearby couldn't help but feel the situation was a little amusing! Sorry Diana.
The next morning I said another goodbye to a long term travel friend, Jonathan, who was making his way East to the not quite so safe Venezuela. It was very sad to say goodbye to the last long term travel friend for my trip and it dawned on me that I wouldn't have known anyone else I meet for very long any more.
During the day I rather rished around booking a flight to Bucaramanga for that afternoon and squeezing in some shopping in town. I dropped off a few gifts at Diana's house for her family after they were so kind to me and headed to the airport for my flight to Bogota, and then onwards to Bucaramanga, leaving behind Cartagena which has to be one of my favourite cities I have ever been too, it is beautiful!
