We had a hellish journey from San Pedro to make it here but we finally arrived in Peru!! Woo hoo! We got a night bus to the Chilean border town Arica that took about 12 hours then a colectivo taxi over the border to Tacna bus station in Peru and then another 6 hour bus journey to the town of Arequipa! Phew! I tell you this is hard work! Anyway we are planning to spend a good few days here as we need some time to recover. I can´t tell you how different Peru is to Chile. You can see it as soon as you cross the border. The people are more indigenous looking, the buildings are half finished and most of them are shacks and the landscape from the border all the way to Arequipa was dry arrid sand dunes and mountains. The bus ride to Arequipa took longer than expected but apparently that is normal. You get there when you get there in Peru! The weather is totally different here too. Its rainy season and pretty cold but its quite nice to wrap up warm for a change! Arequipa is quite a pretty town surrounded by volcanic mountains. The main town square has lots of pretty buildings on it that are all made out of volcanic ash and are white. Our hostel is cute and the family that own it are really nice. Everyone staying there is nice too and its nice to chat to fellow travellers over the HUGE free brekkie we get. i think the highlight for most of the boys is that there is a Platstation with Pro Ev Soccer! The food situation is pretty similar here there is quite a lot of fast food chicken places but at least there are no horrible hotdogs!! We have managed to find some nice local places that do lunch or dinner for 3 Soles for 2 courses which is about 40p! At least the food is traditional and quite tasty! there is a canyon near by that is apprently the deepest in the world that we are going to try and see but its a bit of a pain to get to and we are feeling dead lazy! We have heard from some freinds that we met in Malaysia that they have just done a great jungle trek up to Macchu Picchu in Cuzco so that´s going to be our next stop. Bring on the 12 hour bus journey!!
