An early start for our drive along the Great Ocean Road recommended by family, friends, and the tourist board! Built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and dedicated to soldiers killed during World War I, the road is the world's largest war memorial. Winding along the coast and providing access to several prominent landmarks, including theTwelve Apostles limestone stack formations. A whole days worth of driving and drinking in the spectacular coastline with your eyes. First stop after 2ish hours was Bell's Beach, used for the filming of Point Break. Then on to Lorne, a pleasant seaside resort, for a coffee stop (very nice babycinno enjoyed by Hazel). Back in the car for a scenic drive to Apollo Bay for lunch. Then more coastal scenery with amazing turquoise seas and golden sandy beaches until we reached the 'twelve apostles' (see photo). We watched the helicopters taking off, circling the coast, and landing- four of them doing 10 minute tours- above the many tourists walking the cliffs (mostly Chinese). The views were quite stunning and we spent a good hour walking and taking many photos of the limestone stacks (now 9 we counted due to erosion). The final stop was at Loch Ard Gorge. A steep descent by wooden steps and ending on a secluded sandy beach surrounded by the cliffs. We'll worth the effort (back up was tough!). I've added photos to the album ' Great Ocean Road'. A long drive home, and a very nice chicken pie waiting for us cooked by the lovely Gayle. We have been looked after a treat! Quite sad to be leaving Melbourne tomorrow.
