Its raining, its pouring, we're stuck inside and its boring!
We arrived in Hue yesterday afternoon and it rained the whole way here, all through the night and the whole day today - the guidebook wasn't lying when it said Hue is the wettest place in Vietnam!
Last night we went two minutes up the road and went for a drink and dinner at a very nice Indian restaurant. We then called it a night and stayed in the room all evening listening to the rain.
Today we got up at 12pm and decided we just had to bite the bullet and head out in the rain. After about 5 minutes we decided that the boat trip on the perfume river and the walk around the citidel weren't going to be that enjoyable so headed to the DMZ bar for lunch. I ordered Thai soup which unfortunately wasn't very nice, I think the waiter must have guessed this when he came to collect the plates and i just mumbled 'uh-ha' when he asked if we enjoyed the meal. Two minutes later he was back with a comments card. We both filled it out, and being honest i said the soup 'needed improvement'. The waiter came to collect our carefully folded up cards, opened them in front of us and started reading them! His face fell when he saw my comment and he asked what was wrong with the soup. my response 'it didn't taste of much' was not specfic enough so he made me write out what was wrong with it on the card! A minute later another of the staff came over and introduced herself as customer service (customer harrassment would have been more accurate). She again asked what was wrong with the soup, I struggled to put my finger on one specific thing, but settled with it was a bit watery and didn't taste of coconut milk. To which she responded 'we don't use coconut milk, just normal milk'. I then had to explain how that wasn't actually Thai soup then - which she said she would tell the chef!
We decided that this was not the bar to spend the afternoon in so quickly got the bill. But of course she will have taken the soup off the bill after all the hassle - nope!
We then braved the weather again to head to Why Not? bar. This bar was much more inviting and we stayed for a couple of hours drinking wine and beer, playing drafts and pool. Robin also bizarrely ordered a rum drink containing butter sugar and syrup, to which after one sip he asked 'why would they make a drink with butter in it', it didn't seem to occur to him that perhaps this was becuase muppets like him ordered drinks with butter floating in it!
After a while we decided to head back to the hotel through the gauntlet of open manhole covers, rapidly growing torrents of water and low hanging electricity cables. We anticipate spending the rest of the day between watching bad TV in the hotel and sitting in the bar next door.
And our bus doens't leave until 4.30pm tomorrow - no idea how we are going to fill another day - i suspect it will involve food, alcohol and wet feet.
