Da da da daah, da da da da daaa...Just call me Indiana Jones. Just spent two days trekking in the mountains south of Chiang Mai, facing many near death experiences, I made it through - but not entirely unscathed! Am covered in scratches and bites and now smell liked I showered in germoline. Was definitely worth it though.
Day one - we went to and orchid and butterfly farm (which was frankly pretty crap) then drove into mountains and started a 4 hour near vertical trek, i can't explain how tough it was, we were all dripping with sweat and had to cross rivers on fallen trees (v scary), tiny paths with sheer drops next to them (vv scary), You had to look down at ur feet the whole time incase you tripped over a rock. I fell over twice, stuck my foot in a mud hole, got cut by hundred of spikey yellow things (some of the spikes I still can't get out!) but eventually made it to the top - and it was incredible.
Stayed with the Karen village tribe in a bamboo hut overlooking the mountains - amazing views, cold beers and a bunch of fun Peruvians, French and Danish people made it an interesting evening! We stayed up late talking with our stoned Thai tour guide, who kept breaking to bad versions of Bob Marley songs (with his own take on the lyrics - 'i show the tourists', and 'no blah blah no cry').
Surprisingly I didn't actually have an issue with the little hut toilet and cold showers or sleeping in the hut, but that's perhaps because the Danish girls were so freaked out I felt better - we heard their scream though the dark from the toilet as they had found two huge spiders - the next toilet visit was in a group of 5 girls and was outside the toilet as no one dared go in!
Day 2 - woke up to early morning mist over mountains (will upload when get to a pc) was stunning. We then had a two hour downhill trek to a waterfall (again v scary and I slid over twice almost causing a domino effect knocking our whole group down the mountain).
We then hiked another hour and went on a elephant ride for an hour which was soo scary, Robin was a big girl about it and spent the whole time saying 'I don't like it','we're going to fall off','the elephants going to fall down the sheer drop, he's too close','we're going to die' etc, etc!! Our elephant had a mind of its own and they go up really steep and tiny paths in forest and riverside. Will not be doing it again.
After that our white water rafting followed by bamboo rafting was a breeze.
We are absolutely shattered now tho, going to grab dinner and will post pics when I can get to a pc to take them off our camera.
Da da daaa da...
