After driving down the most scenic road we had come across so far we made it to Nelson Lakes and it was breath taking. The water was dead still and so clear you could see the refelextion of the mountains that surrounded each lake. After walking round the lakes we decided to stay in the DOC site a seculded camp ground right next to the lake, which was really nice and very cheap.
The next day we headed to Blenium and after checking the weather forecast, we decided to stay just east of Picton in another stunning mountain secenary seculded bay DOC site (£3.50 each) were we throw a line in and watch another great sunset. The Malborough and Nelson regions are absolutley amazing and camping around it has been an experience we will never forget.
The next day it was back to Blenium to check out the wine tasting, hiring some cheap bike from a campsite we made it to 4 of the 9 wineries and opted to drink the wine rather than spit it out, so the ride got pretty wobbely and was great banter, the wine was also great.
The weather turned the next day as a pacific storm hit the island, so we decided to head south. That journey was pretty memeroble, taking a battering from the wind we drove the coastal road and watch the storm kicking off, it was pretty incredible.
Finally we made it to Kaikoura, but the storm stopped any boats from going out so we headed down the scenic road, seeing snow capted mountains to a natural seal coleny. This was amazing and free and we sat for hours watching the seals in the natrual environment from just 3 yards away. We then found a nice sleeping spot 3 yards away from the crashing waves and enjoyed watching the end of the storm.
The wind finally dropped and we were able to get on a whale watch tour, it was a bit touristy but amazing to see 2 sperm whales just a mile or so away from the harbour. The whales came to the surface after being under for about 45 mins, took in some air for about 15 mins then arced thier back, whipped up thier tails and dived back under, it was a great trip.
The next day the surf had also sorted itself out a nice 3- 4 foot wave. After a few hours of surfing the clouds came out so we hit the road following the sun towards Christchurch. We both didnt fancy too long in a city so found a lovely little town called Waikuku beach just north of Christchurch and decided to check out the beach. A perfect clean little wave was there so we surfed again for a few hours and camped in a cheap campsite for the night.
We have now just arrived in Christchurch where we will meet Tims parents who fly in on Friday.
Chops and Tim xx
