This morning we visited the local market which took some exploring on our part and included being filmed by a local on their phone. Swings & roundabouts ;-)
This afternoon I went to visit a local charity that cares for babies through to 6-12 months whose mother's have died in childbirth (approx 1 in 16 women) or who have been abandoned. They have a social worker who seeks through the local communities to find the families. The object is to work with the families to resettle the babies once they are weaned. I had a cuddle with Jacinta.
Tessa went for a walk up the hill across from the campsite. Here are her impressions: Six of us headed out to summit the peak opposite, we turned off the main road onto a dirt track and then headed straight up a small gritty footpath. As we slipped, slid, huffed and puffed our way to the top we soon found we were being followed by two nimble children of around 5 and 7 years old. We stopped a couple of times to catch our breath and take photos of the view of the three local Virunga volcanos: Mt Muhavura, Mt Gahinga, and Mt Sabyinya. One which shares borders with Uganda, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of Congo. Our summit offered stunning views of Lake Mutanda.
We decided to make it a circular route and continued on and around, then down, following a small path which took us weaving through crop plots and sugar cane. The children were still with us and making far easier work of it than we were.
By the time we reached the bottom we'd attracted a posse of children and a local drunk man who 'loved us all'. After much chit-chat, hand holding and photos we waved good bye and headed back to the camp.
