Day 4
Depart Brisbane 8am
Arrive Roma 3.30pm
480kms
Stops
- west of Brisbane for fuel
- Chinchilla for lunch
- fuel in Miles
- truck parking area in the middle of nowhere for a toddler toilet stop (glad we packed the potty).
For such a big day in the car, it went surprisingly smoothly. We made good time, and the kids travelled quite well.
We unfortunately had to pack up a wet tent due to overnight drizzle. This included a small patch of water inside the tent that resulted in a wet pillow and thermarest, but this dried in the car so wasn't too bad.
We wound our way out of Brisbane with ease - their freeways make it pretty easy to get around. Heading through the picturesque Lockyer valley and up the hill to Toowoomba, you couldnt help but feel for the people devastated by the horrendous flooding just over 18months ago.
Out the other side of the range, the landscape started to change - flatter, broader landscape, and black soils (which we think may have been the cause of many kms of leaning power poles)
We passed cotton growing areas, and briefly convinced Mr7 that the white dots on the side of the road was snow.
We stopped for lunch at Chinchilla - picnic style in a park. Plenty of space for the kids to run off some energy, before the final haul into Roma.
The landscape changed again, with the soil redder and the vegetation "scrubbier". We spotted some emus after lunch, which was pretty exciting.
Roma is a town impacted by the resources boom. The caravan park we are staying at also has a number of "workers accommodation" huts. Another caravan park across the road is currently closed while they level it, to allow construction of workers accommodation units.
We're staying at the "Big Rig" caravan park. The boys were thrilled to find that the camp kitchen included a tv, a perfect spot to watch the NRL grand final.
The day was mild (low to mid 20s), and the forecast suggests that tonight could be downright chilly, but hopefully will be wonderfully mild again tomorrow.
