The landscape changed again today, and somewhere along the Warrego Hwy we were "welcomed to the outback" by a road sign.
The surrounds are scrubby, but still a surprising amount of green in with the browns of the dry grasses. These parts have had extraordinary amounts of rainfall in the last few years.
The amount of road kill also started to increase, and we saw our first mob of large wedge tailed eagles as compared to black crows, picking at the roadside.
We also saw a cow that had been a victim of the highway, with the car that obviously hit some time in the last 24hours, parked off the side of the road, unable to be driven! Yikes...we're scared enough of hitting a kangaroo, let alone a cow!!
When we got out of the car at Charleville, we noticed it was just a few degrees warmer (mid to high 20s), and we also noticed the flies that had been generally absent until now. Certainly feeling like we're in the outback.
After dinner we went to the local national parks office, where a Bilby sanctuary is located. These nocturnal little creatures are something you always thought were a bit on the mythical side - you know, do they really exist? But they most certainly do, and the kids, albeit somewhat tired, managed to enjoy the information and viewing session that forms the "bilby experience".
We are at the Bailey Bar Caravan Park for two nights, so have completely set up the camper trailer, awning and all, for the first time of the trip. While we have a nice little patch of grass beneath us, we don't have a lot of shade. It will be cool again tonight, but looking forward to a lovely warm (but not hot) day again tomorrow, when we can explore more that Charleville has to offer.
