To get from Adelaide to Cairnes we travelled via the Stuart highway and the outback! Our first stop was Coober Pedy. As we leave Adelaide and enter the outback the heat hits us immediately along with 3000 buzzing flies!!!! The little town of Coober Pedy is famous for opal mining, it is also famous for it's underground living. Due to the heat, most homes are underground caves. The town itself is lifeless, lots of sand and deserted work sites, very strange and eerie. But doing as the locals do we visit an underground church and an underground house built in the 1920's by 3 women which they dug out themselves, we then stayed in an underground motel which was basically a cave and headed off with the feeling that Coober Pedy is probably the strangest place we will ever visit! Anyhows on the road again and off to Ayers Rock
