Day 4 - "You've...Got to Pick A Pocket Or Two..."
Our day started very peacefully with some sunbathing around the pool. For some reason the smaller pool up our end of the hotel is always completely deserted, so it's still like our own private pool! We then then had an explore around Ornos (start ominous doom-laden music in your heads, please) which took us around the beach bars and then over to the other beach which is dedicated to sports and kite surfing. We sat and watched these for a while as the surfers were fearless, and it was quite a show! Then we thought we would walk up the hill for a further explore (film music getting more intense...) and the view back over Ornos from the top was lovely. On walking back down, however, Andrew realised his phone was not in his pocket (music now full on Jaws). We reckoned it must have just slipped out of his pocket coming back down the hill as he used his phone at the top of the hill. Cue scouring the path we had just taken, but the phone was nowhere to be seen...
Luckily Andrew has the "Findmyiphone" app on his phone, which allows you to lock your phone from another device AND enables you to locate and track your phone on a map. This we did on my phone, and it showed up in another part of the island, so it had been picked up (or swiped...) rather quickly. I was angry (think Psycho strings...) and rang Andrew's phone and some guy picked up. We were back at the hotel by now, and obviously the guy on the other end was speaking in Greek, so I thrust the phone at the receptionist who spoke to him. After his conversation, he said we had to go to his (the thief's!) house in some random village in the hills. Terrible idea! Thankfully the manager was also there who pointed out this was unreasonable, and he should return the phone to the hotel. After some more rapid discussion in Greek between the manager, the receptionist guy and the guy with Andrew's phone, it had somehow been agreed that we would meet him at the bakery at the end of the road and get the phone back like some kind of shady Mafia deal. Deeply sceptical, we went to the bakery to await the return of the phone, all the while thinking he would demand a ransom, or perhaps kidnap me at gunpoint. Obvs nothing like that happened...He turned up with the iPhone, completely mute and (I thought) both sheepish and cowed. Andrew was very generous in thinking maybe he picked it up for safekeeping, but I'm not convinced. We then returned to the hotel, reunited with iPhone and feeling both relieved and puzzled. The manager was ecstatic, and after kisses all round the holiday was returned to normal. WEIRD!
After that strange hour, we were in need of a drink, natch, so went to the taverna round the corner and had some beer and wine with a lovely lunch of Greek salad and tzatziki. This was served by a rather lovely waitress from Croatia who sat and chatted with us for a while. Equilibrium now fully restored, we returned to the hotel for some more afternoon sun. I fully feel asleep by the pool, waking up with a loud snort and burnt skin. Ah well!
After that we went into town to go to the outdoor cinema. They were showing the Disney film Moana, but we didn't realise it was dubbed in Greek rather than subtitled. Even though Andrew's pretty good at Greek, that was probably too much even for him, so we abandoned the idea and went for a great meal at a restaurant in the middle of town called Familia. A maitre d' of Amazonian stature greeted and seated us, and the restaurant was beautiful with pretty huge portions being served up (YES!). I had lamb cooked in lemon with rice, carrots and sprouts (yes SPROUTS) followed by chocolate fudge pie and ice cream. So basically a roast dinner. We left feeling v v full and happy.
Off to the beach tomorrow morning, with perhaps a trip to some Ancient ruins for a bit of History. Can't wait!xx
