I can't believe it's now time for my final blog in Sydney, 2 months have gone by almost to the day since we finished the OZbus and its been such such fun!
The past few weeks have been the highs of my time in Sydney for sure; I have really settled in and found my feet here. I haven't written this for a month or so, but ill give you an update of what I've been up to. One of the strangest things I've seen since I've been here is definitely waking up to the city covered in red dust from all the strong winds. I actually thought we had been hit by nuclear weapons and that the world was ending…was pretty surreal seeing a red haze over the city when you open your eyes at 7am! Have also been trotting around the Rocks and the fabulous market they have there at the weekends. It's the place where the convicts started arriving into from England and the streets are all cobbled and the buildings a lot older than the rest of the city. It overlooks the harbour so a really nice way to spend a morning and your pennies…that's where I bought my cool didgeridoo from J
Have also been to an opera at THE Opera House which is a must here I'd say. Me and Michelle spent a very civilized evening (civilized, me?!) starting with dinner in the Opera Bar overlooking the bridge, champagne and then a night watching The Mikado. It is more of a comedy than a traditional opera and it was also sung in English which helped! Really enjoyed it though, definitely not what I was expecting…so much better!
The past 2 weeks has been just me and Michelle, as Nicki went to Ayers Rock and Melbourne on an organized trip. Was strange not having the third part of our trio here. And as soon as she left I got sick L Woke up one morning and couldn't speak a word….no not from karaoke or drinking…I just totally lost my voice. Now I know some of you may say it's a good thing to keep me shut up for a bit, it so made me really how much I gabb gabb gabb on all day haha! So I croaked and made Michelle speak for me wherever we went! That first weekend we went out for the most delicious breakfast I have ever eaten. Bills Restaurant in Surrey Hills does the most gorgeous scrambled eggs I have eaten in my life (and mum I'm sure he could rival the Mrs. Cherry cheese and tomato omelet). Mmmm I'm almost dribbling thinking about it now! Well I did go yesterday too, naughty me. We then headed into Hyde Park to check out a few sights like St. Mary's Cathedral, Anzac War Memorial and the giant chess set with all the local tramps surrounding it. Once that was done then we went over to Mosman, about a half hour ferry ride, to Michelle's Irish friends for the NRL grand final. It was nice to meet some people who weren't backpackers for once and had some lovely food and beers.
Our final week together started with the ultimate that Sydney has to offer…I climbed the harbour bridge!!!! I can't believe that I actually did it, I'm really starting to realized I'm scared of everything while I'm over here haha! But I told the guide I was pretty nervous and he took me under his wing to make sure I was ok. The worse part was the start where the floor we had to walk on was like grating, so you could see straight down to the ground and sea when you were walking. Kept my head up though and tried to look up which worked but then we had to climb these steps to reach the arch. They were vertical with gaps between, good god!!!! I was moving like a snail but I lived to tell the tale and made it to the top and felt like I was on top of the world. Such an achievement and something I would totally recommended for people to do if they come to Sydney. The next day we headed over to Watson's Bay where they have the best fish & chips in the city. I've been addicted to chips and mayonnaise the past few weeks so it was nice to get the best of the best J The cliffs and beach front are gorgeous there, and it was more of the 'real' Sydney that I came here to see. We even saw a dog with a lifejacket…Freddie would have loved one. Maybe for his Christmas present mum, then he can swim in the pool?!!
I'm now on my final week in Bondi before me and Michelle head off on our road trip to Adelaide via Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. Sunday started the week off with a bang as we went to Australian Idol!!!!! And saw Lisa Minnelli perform which was just amazing, she was fantastic and we were only 6ft away from her! Aussie Idol is a favorite of ours and Michelle applied for free tickets and we somehow got them yay! One of the best nights in Sydney for sure and we maybe have even been on TV woooo! This week we are heading over to Palm Beach (where Home & Away is filmed) so maybe I'll get start spotted there or maybe Alf will take me under his wing! Fingers crossed.
So that's been my time in Sydney, pretty darn cool I'll say. I think now though that I'm ready to leave and see what the rest of the country has to offer……
