WHOA!! DOUBLE BLOG ACTION DAY!! LUCKY!!
(double blog as in i felt it was necessary to write two! check out the other one also!)
So I figured it was necessary to feature a blog about something the Swiss do very well...Food.
The Swiss manage their food by the season, having warm stuff in the winter (obvs) and other stuff in the summer (also obvs). After being here for a month, I've compiled a list of food that I've found delicious, and food that isn't...well actually, I haven't found anything really gross just yet...so, just a list of the good stuff!!
Tranche au Fromage: It's all the benefits of having a cheese pizza without the sauce! Think "cheese quiche with tons of cheese, and nothing more". It's eggs, cheese and crust. Served hot, and you can eat it for days. Je l'aime beacoup!
Raclette: The Swiss are very particular about their cheeses. While Canadian's are off studying hockey stats, the Swiss study the science of cheese! Every cheese has a particular melting point, at which it can be used for a particular dish. Raclette cheese comes from the mountains and is heated under a special grill, which in the wrong hands can look like a torture devise, but with cheese, it heats the top layer to a crispy point, then you take it out and shave off the top gooey layer with a knife onto some cut up potatoes and preserves like chutney or pickles or whatever. The result is gooey, cheesy mashed potatoes. Drool...
Fondue: This one is obvs. But fondue here in Suisse is not the same out of the bag one in Canada. It's made with Gruyere cheese and wine, that you melt and dip bread in. Droooooooooooooooooooool. But I was nearly shot for recommending that we eat fondue in the summer.
"Fondue in the summer? You crazy foreigner!! Why the f*** would we do that??"
To which I replied, "Cos its good?"
"NO!! Fondue is VINTERFUUD!" My Swiss German friend shreiked at me.
"Oh, I see" I said, slinking into the shadows...
Jambon Cru: En Francais, it means "raw ham". But in English it means delicious! It's a salty ham like proscutto that you can eat with cheese or melon. It's delicious and the Swiss eat it at all hours of the day.
McDonalds: For some reason, Europe got the good end of the deal on McDonalds here! They're nice, clean, modern, they serve good and different foods, and um...they're not on every corner like in N. America! We had this discussion in DEVS about McDonaldization of the world...and it's all cultural adaptation! In Europe, McD's is on par with Starbucks (gasp!) but alas, it's still not enough to make me want to go there!
Migros: Walmart of Switzerland. I.E. so gross... Ok, I said there wasn't anything wrong with Swiss food, well I lied. Migros is the super chain that EVERYONE gets their food from! All the packaging looks the same and the quality is crap. Milk goes bad in like 2 days. Alas...
Boulangeries: The vapid mess that is Migros is quickly balanced by the various Boulangeries that are spread out in all corners of the city. They're individual shops that pimp out food sex. Gluttonous quantities of paninis, cheeses, baguettes, croissants. For the Kingstonites, it's like having a Panchancho's on every corner!
That's only a taste (HAHAHAHA) of the awesome Swiss food I've come across. The Swiss national day is coming up, so I'm expecting a grand feast will come my way as well!
Turrah!
