We arrived in Rainbow Beach very early in the morning and just in time to spot our first Surf Dudes, working their magic with the waves!!! They were pretty impressive. We spent the rest of the day at the beach where we bumped in to Marcus, Elad and Oliver from our sailing trip who were going to join us on Fraser Island. That evening we were all put in groups, Jada, Elizabeth, Carl and Laura joined the A-Team
. The boys under the influence of alcohol nominated themselves as the Chef's for the weekend and we held them to it
We rose early to pack our Eskies (cooler boxes) with food, Goon and Beer! We loaded up our 4x4 with our tents, camping gear, sunnies and togs (Swim wear)!!! Then we were on our way! We got the Ferry over to Fraser Island the largest Sand Island in the world and the fun began. First stop was lunch at Lake McKenzie, where we bumped in to Claire and Sarah from Whitsunday's!!! We then headed down to the beautiful fresh water lake where we swam and messed around in the water posing for lots of silly photos!
We went for a rocky drive along the beach to the Mohino Shipwreck where we camped for the night. We were soon joined by a group of Irish girls and boys and the party really started. The boys first attempt at dinner wasn't bad apart from the fact that there was a strange smell of fried washing up liquid coming from the onions Yep that's right they did exactly what the guide warned them not to do before we left, confuse the washing up liquid with the cooking oil!!! It was so funny but they did a good job on the Steak and Potato Salad
. We started a sing song and the Irish guy's came and joined in, we played lots of games and had a really great night under the stars near the sea!
Somehow we all managed to get up to watch the sunrise, it was so beautiful. We didn't have much time to pack up and make a move before the tide came in. We headed to the Mohino Wreck were we got told off by the Ranger for not reading the signs!! Apparently we were standing on the wreck but we thought it was just sand!! Next stop was Indian Head where we saw magnificant views of the sea. We could see dolphins, ray's and lots of Sharks eating lunch! We didn't go too close to the edge in case we became part of it
We then ate lunch on the beach and headed for a very long walk along tough, deep sand to the Champagne Falls. It was very pretty and fun to play in the waves. We headed back to our 4x4 but really weren't looking forward to the walk. Clair was feeling a little cheeky and asked some guys we met on the beach if they fancied giving us girls a lift and they agreed (ooh the powers of being a girl) Needless to say we beat all our lads and had time to play a game of snatch!!
We then drove to find another camping spot on the beach! We set up camp, Clair and I stupidly offered to sleep in the broken tent under a tree . Dinner was lovely the boys out done themselves with a great chicken stirfry. Carl and I made some batter and we had tasty pancakes with a twist for dessert!!! The Irish boys and girls joined us again for more drink and games. The only problem that night were the Dingo's were out and about and the Norwegians and Sweedes decided to be exhibitionists (thank god for the lack of lighting)
.
On our last day Clairbear (aka Nigel Mansell) drove us along the beach to Lake Wabby. Everyone was amazed by her driving skills especially when she parked as if she was in a race car not a 4x4 with 11 people in it, camping gear and 2 Eskies!!!! Good safe driving! We went for a walk which we thought was 20 minutes in fact it turned out to be 45. We seen a redback spider in it's web on the way to Lake Wabby, it was a bit scary! We got to Lake Wabby which was a gorgeous lake surrounded by Sand Dunes, we had great fun racing down them into the lake!
We raced back to catch our ferry and luckily made it on time . We weren't so happy when we had to get up to go Dolphin Kayaking at 6 the next morning! It was really hard work but we got to see some Dolphins and Whales so it was worth it in the end. That evening we walked up to the Sandblow for sunset and got a lovely surprise it was so beautiful. Lots of sand dunes looking out to the sea, a perfect end to a fantastic few days
It was really sad leaving Rainbow Beach and saying goodbye to all our new friends, but we hope to meet up with some of them along the way.
