I have a tip for you all from surf school - if you ever need some extra help just say to the Aussie Surf Instructor 'excuse me sweetie pie what was your name again?'! I accidently said that to him and ended up with 30 minutes extra help!
So surf school: well it was a bit of an adventure really. Not at all like it was in the brochure. We got picked up and immediately went to a bottle shop to buy some beers for the journey (!!) and then by the time we got there we were a wee bit merry but it was a small party then straight to bed (about 2am with surfing starting at 8am!). So we got up and got our rather fetching wet suits and board and went on a drive to find some waves. We went out to the seal rocks area which is about 3 hours away from Sydney and the first beach had none and the second had massive ones. Which was a bit scary but after about an hour I was used to my face being in the water and what to do when a big wave is about to smash over your head. (Dont worry family, im telling you this now because I am safe back at the hostel!). But something A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. happened when paddling out to a wave: I swam with dolphins, about 6 came really close to me and a couple did a jump out the water - it was amazing, one of those moments where I wished I had a video camera. Im so pleased, I dont agree with dolphins in captivity so that makes it even better to 'swim' with them in the wild.
After that we went back to the camp site - now apparently its got hot showers, comfortable cabins - nope its got hot showers which is brown water and horrible bunk beds that look rather scrufy. But we were so tired we didnt care and for a change my excema is really good and loved the sea water so 2 days with no shower was easy!
The second night we just had another party of drinking games and then I had an early night (that was 1am when the party went on to 6am with another 8am start!) Needless to say I was about the only one who managed to stand up on my board on day 2. I had progressed to a smaller board too which meant it was easier to turn in the waves but I prefered to use it as a lilo - I cant understand why thats not an appropriate use of a surf board?
I learnt something else too - apparently the international distress signal is not to be used when you have discovered tan lines in shallow water....
Well Im shattered and I start my 2 day trip to Melbourne tomorrow so im off to bed.
Night night
