Day 153-154, 12-13 November 2014, Afternoon out in La Souterraine. I headed out with good friend Barbara this afternoon for Christmas shopping endeavours, a coffee and a cruise around the historic heart of 11th century La Souterraine. (Pictured is the Rapunzel like tower of the 13th C. Porte de St Jean/St John's Gate in the city walls). The heart of the town is truly medieval and lovely to stroll on foot - but as we discovered with cars sneaking up behind us constantly, is not actually pedestrianised. Very deceptive. Obviously frustrating for drivers as well as they negotiate the tricky one way streets and have tourists wandering along gazing upwards. The one-way system qualifies as tricky because I could not for the life of me spot the signs indicating the direction! My favourite sight was the tower, though the church it sits alongside was also pretty impressive. Rather disappointingly however, no church jukebox (refer to Le Dorat entry). The name of the town, translating as ‘subterranean’, apparently comes from the underground part of the 11th C. church - the Roman crypt. Cold and windy (but fine - which is the main thing), we left with a boot load of groceries, presents and an absolute steal of a bargain for me - a puffy jacket. Usually €25 and on special at €12! Perfect price point so that if the dogs wreck it or I catch it on a fence or anything... I won't be broken hearted. Almost too warm (but I suspect the weather is on a downward spiral - so not worried about that). Arrived home shortly before dusk and put new jacket on immediately... desperate to keep warm while the fire slowly comes to life. Next outing? Monday to Magnac for a couple of hours in Terri's Tea Shop I think.
