So I´ve literally just got back from Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Pueblo which is the nearest town to the famous wonder of the world.
We got the train yesterday morning, very early and spent a pleasant 3 hours traveling there. The train, although the cheapest one, was comfortable and we were served a free drink and snack. This in my book will make any journey more enjoyable.
Unlike most people, we decided to do this area in two days, spending the first looking around the small town and the second on Machu Picchu. The town itself doesn`t offer much, execept over priced food and of terrible quality. Don`t expect much in those terms and you shouldn`t be dissappointed.
We did go to the hot springs, which were 10 soles to enter and you have the option to hire a towel before arriving if you don`t wish to soak yours, especially if you`re travelling the same day. We spent a good two hours there, mainly because we were unaware of what else to do there. Different pools, different temperatures and different depths.
Early night and earlier start. We got up at 4 to get the first bus to Machu Picchu and see the sunrise there. This also avoids some of the crowds which come of the first train from Cusco and make it up there for 10.
Machu Picchu is as picturesque as one would imagine and we did the postcard shot as well as many others. We took a walk to the inca bridge as well as visit the sun temple and the condor temple. I would probably recommend a guide, which we didn`t do since we were rather unaware of what everything was. We did eavesdrop into many conversations from the guides to fill in some of the missing blanks as we went along.
We had purchased a combi ticket for the M.P and the museum, which was situated at the bottom of the mountain. We visited this after on the way back down. This helped a lot in terms of the different stages of building and about the inca people. This made up slightly for the lack of guide at the wonder of the world.
We hung around the town, looked through the markets and caught our train back to Cusco, arriving at 8.30. Another early start tomorrow as we are heading to the Amazon Basin - Manú park. I`ll update you with those adventures upon my return.
