We've been in Sydney, or Dee Why to be exact, for just under 2 weeks, so thought i'd better update what's been happening.
The flight in from Singapore was rather uneventful, well apart from a slight run in with the lady on the check in desk who wasn't too happy with our 19.4kgs of excess luggage, good job we had our visa to prove we were emigrating, didn't fancy paying £48/kg. Steph had hoped to make an appearance on Nothing to Declare, but no such look, apart from a sign advising channel 7 may be filming, there wasn't a camera crew or bag search in sight! My sister obviously thought we'd get stopped as we were in arrivals a little earlier than she expected!
The journey from the airport to Dee Why, a Sydney suburb in the Northern Beaches 40 minutes from the city, was a mixture of relief, that we'd made it, and excitement at what was to come.
The 'eyes right' moment, when the harbour bridge first comes into view is one that I will remember for a long time! A few celebratory TEDS (Tooheys Extra Dry) and a couple of pizzas later we were settling in for our first nights sleep in Australia!
The last 2 weeks have been a mixture of practical things like sorting out bank accounts, medicare and mobile phones, trips to the beaches in Dee Why, Manly and Curl Curl, visits to the City for a night out with Jo's dragon boat team, Sunday afternoon drinks in the Opera bar and Darling Harbour and trips to Warringah Mall.
Maybe not all that exciting but getting used to the new surroundings, new sites and new lifestyle have been both exciting and challenging.
Last night we had a trip around the harbour on the Southern Swan, during the Vivid Sydney light festival, sailing around the harbour seeing the city lit up, from the water, certain was an experience.
Tomorrow we have tickets for the first state of origin game, hoping to watch New South Wales beat Queensland but either way hoping for a good atmosphere.
We spent a good few hours, in a Manly travel shop (budget oz travel, check them out on facebook) on Monday planning our next few weeks travelling. We've booked our campervan, which we pick up from Cairns on 9th June and we've got 6 weeks to experience the delights of the East coast, whilst driving the 3010 kilometres back to Sydney.
Before all that we fly to Darwin on Thursday to spend a week experiencing the delights of the Northern Territories and live life the Bob way!
As for Sydney, we haven't even scratched the surface, there is so much more to see and do, we will be back!
