Heading back north across a corner of Italy and back into Slovenia, we noted that this corner of borders was the least unchanging landscape that we've seen between countries. Just the signage alerts you to a different language and nation.
We'll let the photographs speak for themselves this time, as it's impossible to describe the scale, colours and views of our trip up to and around Triglav National Park. However - some highlights were:
- For Clare, visiting the Lippizaner stud at Lipice - the strong, broad, grey stallions having a Sunday off their training and displays, munching in their spacious stables, while the mares and foals found shade in white fenced meadows.
- Putting Archie on a train! Almost like an open cattle truck that whizzed us to Bojnice, downhill, through tunnels like a fairground ride.
- Swimming in Lake Bojnice, less visited than Bled and with cold, dark green depths amid turquoise, clear edges.
- Driving up the Visnic pass (26 hair pin bends on the way up, 24 on the way down - which Lance and Archie managed with ease) and walking at the top with views of awe inspiring, and rather terrifying peaks.
- Walking up a gorge to the Franja Partisan hospital - hidden in a gorge - where 573 wounded partisans and allies were treated in the war. First hand testimony in the little huts brought it vividly to life.
- 2 great Agriturismo camp spots - a balance between a full campsite and a wild spot. Only one other camper, showers, water and loos, but quiet, rural and with wonderful views. Both times the 'hosts' were friendly and generous with suggestions of things to do.
- Dips in the very cold rivers (especially the Soca) - clear, emerald water rushing over sun bleached stones.
We felt heavy hearted leaving Slovenia and turning west. Only 3 weeks left and entering more familiar, more densely populated territory, we wondered whether the best was behind us. And then Lance found Monte Pizzoc and a broad, flat meadow with views across the plains to Venice one way and up into the Alps the other. Probably the best wild spot we've had!
