Evening viewers,
Here we are at Kings Canyon Resort not so well rested. What between the very large indigenous group staying nearby playing the drums and singing until late last night and the 5.30 to 6am howling of the dingoes, we all decided to sleep in a little.
Michelle has also come down with a head cold which has taken the wind out of her sails a bit.
So hence, your putting up with the backup blogger.
We did have an easy start to the day. After eating breakfast and doing some washing we left camp at 10am heading for Kings Canyon in the Watarrka National Park. We arrived to a big gathering near the car parking area and found out that there was a "handing back" ceremony to the original aboriginal tribe that inhabited this area. This was the group staying at the resort last night.
We decided to do the 6km Kings Canyon Rim Walk which is the hardest and longest walk they have here.
It was the most interesting walk I've done this trip so far, beginning with about 400 rock steps to climb right from the getgo. This took us from the bottom of the ravine to the top of the canyon, which we then proceeded to walk around from one side to the other. There were breathtaking lookouts from very close to the cliff edges out over the sandstone canyon. We did stress a bit at these sections with the kids and found out that the last large section of rock to fall away happened in 1931. This knowledge did not help with the nerves and sense of vertigo experienced. There was a smaller off shoot walk into a ravine called the garden of Eden, which lead to a very deep pool of water with vegetation and rock faces around it. The kids were excited that you were allowed to swim in it, but found out it was freezing cold, so gave it a miss.
Our walk ended about 3pm and 5 weary souls found our camp and veged out until dinner.
Tomorrow will see us doing some smaller, easier walks and taking it easy.
Stay tuned.
